Maher Cup Book Draft 1959-71

This final section of the Maher Cup book is currently the most incomplete. It is also the era for which many people aged in their seventies onwards will have recollections of specific matches and events. In posting this draft I hope it may prompt memories to flow and for me to receive further contributions. I would love more information to make the description more complete and accurate. It would also be wonderful to identify original photographs people may have and be willing to share, that would add life to the text.

  1. Hi Neil,
You’ve done a magnificent job getting the history of the Maher Cup together.
My dad, George Robertson, played for Young in 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959 and 1962. When I reading through the teams and try scorers I was a bit annoyed to see my dad’s surname written as Robinson on many occasions. I checked there was no George Robinson playing for Young. Could you please make the necessary changes and amendments as dad was a proud Scotsman and not one of those sassenachs from down south. I was also surprised to see that Dad scored a few tries.
    Many thanks,
    Kim Robertson

    • Thanks Kim. Your Dad was very important to Young from what others say, not just on the football field, but in his work for the community generally.
